Acne scars are the result of damaged tissue that continues to reproduce itself. These small discolorations are similar to injury scars and occur in both the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. A gentler approach to treating acne scars is microneedling. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling creates controlled channel “wounds” that quickly heal. The body responds to the treatment by increasing the amount of collagen in the dermal layers. The tissues located between the micro-channels act as a blueprint for the creation of newer, healthier skin cells.
How Microneedling Is Performed
Microneedling treatments are performed in the comfort of our office. The process involves creating many tiny micro-channels in the skin. This encourages the skin to fill in the areas with fresh skin. The needles come in a variety of lengths, and the length chosen depends on the thickness of the skin and the depth of the scarring.
Treatment Schedule
For rather significant acne scarring, we may recommend a series of treatment sessions, spaced apart by a set amount of time. Once collagen production increases, subsequent treatments accelerate the healing process further. It takes months after completion of the final treatment for the acne scars to all but disappear. Microneedling is, therefore, not a quick fix, but once the positive results are realized, the skin will be much more even in tone, and the scarring may never again become visible.
Advantages of Microneedling
The science behind microneedling is solid. There is very little risk of infection or negative skin reaction. Since surgery isn’t involved, there is no risk of further scarring. Since harsh chemicals aren’t used, bleaching is not a concern. Microneedling involves a healing process that is entirely natural, and the tiny micro-openings are created solely for the purpose of kickstarting a natural healing process that includes an increase in collagen production.
