When we were younger, our skin was able to bounce back from emoting, talking and virtually anything else we did with it. The reason skin was able to stay smooth and plump in our youth was because of collagen. Collagen is the natural ingredient your body produces to give skin its natural plumpness and bounce. The reason we get wrinkles as we age is because we lose this collagen as we grow older.
Microneedling is a sophisticated treatment which uses tiny needles to lightly pierce the skin, causing the skin to create more collagen. The pricks of the needle are light enough to cause only minor discomfort to you, but major enough to cause the body to repair itself.
Estetika Skin and Laser Specialists invite you to try microneedling for yourself. Never has it been easier to restore the lost collagen in your cheeks without the use of surgery or a dermal filler.
The Science Behind Microneedling
When some kind of trauma happens to the skin on your face, your body has the automatic response of creating collagen to fix the wound. It doesn’t matter if the trauma is a cut from a tree branch outside, a knick while you were shaving or a bug’s bite, the response is the same.
Microneedling uses this theory to achieve its goal. By using a device called a dermaroller, which is a small wheel covered in extremely thin needles, a member of our medical team will cause potentially hundreds of tiny microfractures to your face. Once your body recognizes these microfractures, it begins to produce collagen to heal itself. The microfracture eventually heals, and the collagen stays on your face.
What Does Microneedling Help Heal?
Microneedling isn’t just for smoother, younger looking skin, and it isn’t just for wrinkles. Microneedling is a great option if you want to:
- Reduce the appearance of acne
- Fight against sagging skin
- Smooth out fine lines
- Minimize the appearance of scars
- And more
Is Microneedling Just for the Face?
The most common place to use microneedling is the face, but that isn’t the only place this procedure can be done. Anywhere on your body that features scars, wrinkles or loose skin can benefit from microneedling. Other places microneedling can be used are the:
Whether the procedure is happening on the face or the other parts of the body, the process is still the same.
The first step is to apply an antiseptic or numbing cream to the area receiving treatment. Because of the width of the needles, microneedling features only a small amount of pain. The gel is applied to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Once the gel is in place, a light covering of water is used to moisten the skin and to make the procedure more smooth.
Once the skin is cleaned and ready, the dermaroller is rolled across the part of the body in a systematic way. The procedure may occasionally be stopped in order to use more water, or to rinse off a specific area. The length of time the procedure takes depends on the area being treated, but most procedures are completed in around an hour’s time.
What Happens Next?
Once the procedure is completed, it’s best to stay out of direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time. Moisturizers and sunscreen are especially recommended in the immediate hours following the appointment. Makeup isn’t recommended, but if it has to be worn it’s best to wait as long as possible before applying it. Makeup should be applied after a coat of moisturizer.
